Somewhere over the Atlantic, I finally let myself think clearly about the two years of hormones and vitamins and “strange remedies” Coralie pressed on me every single day. When I landed, I had the ones I’d quietly kept tested at a lab, because a scientist’s daughter does not throw away evidence. Most were exactly what she claimed. But two of them were not fertility supplements at all. They were a sedative and an appetite stimulant, unlabeled, unprescribed. The swollen face. The exhaustion. The fog I moved through for two years while my husband drifted toward Sabine. My mother-in-law had been keeping me docile and dependent, calling it conception, because a foggy, heavy, tired wife does not apply to graduate programs and does not notice roses on a jacket and does not leave.<\/p>\n
Rowan may not have known. I have gone back and forth on this more times than I can count. And I looked at what a criminal case would cost me: years, lawyers, a return to that city, my face and my marriage and my swollen photographs entered into a record, my Edinburgh place deferred or lost. I had spent two years being made small. I was not going to spend two more being a plaintiff.<\/p>\n
So I chose the smaller freedom over the larger justice. I let Coralie keep her clean name. I took my degree instead. I am not certain, even now, that I chose right. Some nights it feels like wisdom. Some nights it feels like I let a dangerous woman win the only thing that mattered to her, which was never being seen.<\/p>\n
Sabine, I heard, married Rowan eighteen months later. I hope she is well. I mean that with only a little bitterness. She spent months documenting a love story that turned out to be a marriage to a man whose mother medicates the wives she wants controlled, and she walked into it with her eyes open, taking photographs.<\/p>\n
I finished my program. I work in research now, in a city where no one has ever handed me a pill. My mother came to my graduation. She cried, and I understood, finally, why she chose to leave my father with nothing rather than fight him for everything. Some victories cost more than the loss. She had known that at forty.
