The folder was not a weapon. That is the first thing that came apart once the ship left the dock and I had eleven days at sea with nothing to do but think about what I had done.

The court woman at the door was real, but she was not seizing the house. Rowan had misread his own panic. The house had gone into a trust, mine, drawn up the week after the funeral, and the notice simply informed him that the property he had already asked me to divide was no longer his to plan around. He read “the house isn’t ours anymore” into a document that said, in plain language, the house is hers and hers alone.

The second folder, the one with his name, held no revenge. It held a letter from his father.

Everett wrote it three weeks before he died, and made me promise to give it to Rowan only when I finally stopped being their spare tire, because Everett knew, dying, that I never would while he was alive to worry about me. The letter was four pages. It told our son that he had become a man who patted his mother’s forehead like a countertop, that Everett had watched it happen and been too sick and too cowardly to say it, and that the greatest regret of his life was raising a boy who learned to see love as a service he was owed.

I did not know what the letter said when I left it on the table. Everett had sealed it. I only learned the contents months later, when Rowan finally told me, in a voice I had not heard from him since he was small.

That is the part I have to be honest about. My grand exit, the cruise, the trust, the note that said call your lawyer, all of it landed as cruelty in the first hours, and I meant it to. It was Everett’s letter, not my paperwork, that actually reached him. My revenge humiliated my son. His dead father’s honesty changed him. I have thought a great deal about the difference.

I sent one message from the middle of the ocean, on the fourth night, when the guilt got loud. It said only: The animals are safe at Winifred’s nephew’s shelter. I am not sorry I left. I am sorry it took your father dying for me to.

Rowan wrote back a week later. Not to complain, for once. He had read the letter by then. He said, I understand now, and then he said the thing his father accused him of never saying: How are you, Mom?

I cruised for the full year. I saw eleven countries. I scattered a pinch of Everett’s ashes off the stern near Key West at dawn, alone, which is a thing I had promised him and told no one.

Rowan and Delphine are still married, still selfish in the ordinary ways, but he calls now, on Sundays, and he asks about me before he asks for anything, which after forty years is more than I ever expected and less than I deserved, and I have decided both of those can be true.

The house is still mine. I go there between voyages. The cages are long gone, but Everett’s candle is back on the table, and I light it every time I come home from the sea.
