The manager’s name was Odell. He had worked at First County for thirty-one years, and he took one look at my name and asked me to come to the back.

The sealed page was a savings account. Opened in 1994, in my name and Mama’s, the year after my accident. My settlement had been sixty-two thousand dollars. Curtis told everyone it barely covered the hospital. What actually happened was that Curtis took forty-three thousand of it to cover his own gambling debts, and Mama, who had no money and no job and a husband who scared her, could only save what she could steal back a little at a time, in cash, hidden in a flour tin, for twenty-nine years.

The account had grown to eleven thousand dollars on its own. She had never touched it. The twenty-four thousand in the tin was the rest, saved twenty and fifty at a time from grocery change over three decades. She was paying me back my own money, in secret, for the rest of her life, because she had never found the courage to leave the man who took it.

That is the reason for the slap when I was eleven. Not cruelty. The tin was the only thing she owned that Curtis did not control, and a child’s hand reaching for it terrified her more than anything in that house.

Wendell knew. That is the part that still sits in me. He was nineteen when it happened, old enough to understand, and Curtis had given him a truck to keep quiet, and he kept quiet for twenty-nine years while his little sister limped and believed her own family was broke. When I came back from the bank he did not deny it. He said, “Curtis would have made all our lives hell,” which is true, and which is not an answer.

I did not sue him. There was nothing to sue for. Curtis was dead, the money was recovered, and Wendell’s silence was a moral debt, not a legal one. But I have not spoken to my brother since I walked out of that bank, and I do not expect to.

The money was mine. Odell transferred it that afternoon. Thirty-five thousand dollars, for a limp I still have and a settlement I was told did not exist.

I would give every dollar back for one honest conversation with my mother while she was alive. She spent twenty-nine years apologizing to me in a flour tin because she could not say the words out loud. I keep the tin on my counter now, empty, white enamel with the blue chips, and some mornings I understand her, and some mornings I am still eleven years old with a stinging hand, and both of those things are true at once and always will be.
