The chat detonated. Coralie called it cruel. My mother called it dividing the family. Sterling, who owes me four thousand dollars, informed me I had a “money problem.” I turned the phone off and Nadia and I drove down two days later, and the first night was everything I had pictured. Empty beach, the two of us, no digs, no jokes, no card games with claws.<\/p>\n
Then Nadia said the thing over dinner that I have not been able to put down since.<\/p>\n
She asked whether I had done it for her or at them. She said them very gently. She said she had watched me for four years fight her battles louder than she ever asked me to, and that somewhere along the way my standing up for her had started to feel less like protection and more like a war I was fighting with my own family, using her as the reason. She said she did not want to be the wedge my mother accused her of being, and she did not want to marry into a silence that lasted decades because of a beach house.<\/p>\n
I did not have an answer that night. I have thought about it every week since.<\/p>\n
We married in the spring. Small. My mother came. Coralie did not. Sterling did, and paid back six hundred of the four thousand as a wedding gift, which Nadia found funnier than I did.<\/p>\n
The family is fractured now. Not shattered, but there is a crack down the middle of it that runs through every holiday, and I put it there. I was right about the exclusion. I was right that they treated her like staff and me like a checkbook. Being right did not make the crack smaller.<\/p>\n
Nadia and I go to that beach house every year now, just us. It is our tradition, and it is a good one, and it was born out of the ugliest thing my family ever did.<\/p>\n
Some nights I sit on that porch and I am at peace.
