My father.

He had been dead to me for five years, the same as everyone else, except he was not dead. He had left my mother in the spring and moved into a rental two towns over, and Marguerite’s message eight months earlier had been the beginning of it. What Marguerite told me was that my mother had been intercepting my father’s letters to me for years, letters he wrote and she burned, because a reconciled father and daughter could not be controlled the way an estranged one could.

The envelope in my coat was not a weapon aimed at my mother’s money. It was proof of the letters. Postmarked returns, my father’s copies, dates lined up against the years my mother told me he wanted nothing to do with me. My career taught me to check the dates. The dates told a story about a woman who had stolen a father from a daughter to keep them both dependent on her.

I brought him to the door to end her performance in front of the neighbors she cared about more than either of her children.

Here is the part I have never resolved, the part Marguerite still holds against me.

After the neighbors left and the house was quiet and my mother was small in her own kitchen for the first time in my life, she cried, and I believed her. Not about everything. But she said she had been terrified of being left alone, that intercepting the letters was the act of a drowning woman, and something in me, the part that spent twenty years trying to earn her, reached out and held her hand.

I did not cut her off. I forgave her, partially, the way you forgive weather. My father was furious. Marguerite, who had spent eight months helping me, called me a fool to my face and has not spoken to me since. She said some people do not deserve the door held open, and that I had turned her courage into nothing.

Maybe she is right. My father and I are close now. My mother and I speak on Sundays, carefully, and she has never fully apologized, and I have never fully stopped waiting for her to.

I got everything that night. The truth, my father, the end of the performance. And I chose to keep the one person who least deserved keeping, and I still cannot tell you whether that made me free or just trained.
