I did not own the jet.

I have to start there, because the version everyone tells has me flying off into the clouds a triumphant billionaire, and the truth is smaller and stranger and I have stopped being ashamed of it.

I run flight operations logistics for a charter company. Calloway Aerospace is the firm, and yes, it carries my late grandfather’s name, which is exactly why my father married into money and my stepmother’s daughter spent twelve years assuming I had none. The jet was a repositioning flight, empty, headed to the same northern city for a client pickup the next morning. Captain Halvorsen offered me the jump seat because I sign his schedules, and because he had just watched my father call me trash in a public terminal.

“Your jet is ready, ma’am” was true in the way that a manager’s flight is her flight. It was not ownership. It was a courtesy from a man who liked me. But my father heard the word owner and his imagination did the rest, and I let it, and I am not proud of the thing that let me.

I flew up on that empty plane feeling like I had won something enormous. Then I landed.

The celebration was my grandmother’s ninetieth birthday. My father’s mother. The one person in that family who never once let anyone call me poor, who paid my college fees quietly and made me promise never to tell. She died in her sleep the night after the party, and the voicemail I ignored during my dramatic flight was my aunt, calling to say Grandmother had been asking for me all evening, wondering why I never came inside.

I was in the parking lot. I never went in. I was too busy savoring a jet that was not mine.

I did not speak to my father for a year, and then I did, at the funeral, because my grandmother would have hated the silence. He apologized for the airport. I have never told him what it cost me to skip that room, because the price was not his to pay. It was mine.

I still drive the old sedan. I still wear the sweaters. Sabine still tells people I pretended to own a plane, and for once she is telling the truth, and I let her.
