He said yes.

One word, at his mother’s table, and it did not feel like the victory I had built it into over five weeks of documentation. It felt like watching a man realize, in real time, in front of everyone he loved, that he had no defense, and then watching those people rearrange their faces around a version of him they had not known existed.

Marguerite left the room. His father did not raise his glass again. Nadia drove me and the boys home so I would not have to sit in a car with him.

But here is the part the story usually skips.

Roman was not a monster who woke up cruel. He was a man drowning in something he had never named, and I had a notebook full of evidence and not one line in it asking what was wrong with him. When we finally talked, really talked, weeks later, it came out that he had been laid off in a restructuring the month before my fall and had been leaving every morning to sit in a coffee shop pretending to work, terrified, humiliated, and hiding it. “Figure it out” was not contempt for me. It was a man with nothing left to give reaching for the only person he thought was stronger than him.

That does not excuse it. He let me risk my healing arm over a crib while he sat twenty feet away with a secret. I have never fully forgiven the eleven fifty-two p.m. entry, and neither has he.

We went to counseling. He got a job in the spring and a diagnosis of depression he had been running from for years. He is a good father now, present in the physical, unglamorous way that only counts when nobody is watching. The boys are two.

The notebook is in a drawer. I kept it. Not as a weapon anymore. As a reminder that I spent five weeks proving I was right and not one hour asking why, and that being right and being kind are two entirely different skills, and I only had one of them when it mattered.

Marguerite still keeps score, she tells me. On both of us now. I think that is fair.
