It was our kids. Both of them, in the back seat, in uniform, with their backpacks, and a note taped to the headrest that read: Since you’re driving to that neighborhood anyway, the school is on the way. Love, your family.

I had my neighbor help me get them buckled in before Warren came out, then I crutched back inside and watched from the window. He could not exactly unload two children onto the driveway and leave them. So he drove. To Coralie’s, then to the school, in front of Coralie.

That was the whole plan. Petty, satisfying, and I was proud of it for about six hours.

Then Coralie called me that evening. I had never spoken to her. I braced for something ugly.

She apologized. Not for an affair, because there was no affair, that part was true. She apologized because in three weeks of daily rides, Warren had never once mentioned he had children. She had asked about his weekend, his life, and he had built himself a whole single-man story in that car, and the two kids in the back seat that morning were the first she had ever heard of them. She said she felt sick. She said she had told him, in front of the office, that she would take the bus from now on.

That reframed the entire thing. I had set out to embarrass a man for being lazy. What I actually uncovered was a man who had erased his family to flirt with a colleague who was not even flirting back.

I want to be honest that this did not end in a clean divorce and a triumphant new life. Warren was mortified, and mortification made him better for about four months. He drove the kids. He helped. Then the cast came off, and slowly, quietly, it all slid back to me, one skipped morning at a time.

We are still married. I am not going to pretend that is a happy ending, and I am not going to pretend it is a tragic one. It is just the arrangement, the same one most people I know are living inside.

The kids remember the morning they got a ride in Dad’s car with the fancy coworker. They thought it was fun. Coralie, of all people, still sends them a small gift every birthday. She and I text sometimes. She is the only genuinely decent thing that whole week produced, and she was supposed to be the villain.
