Sunday came and nothing happened.

That is the honest version. I had spent three days bracing for a confrontation, rehearsing what I would say, keeping the doorbell footage ready like a weapon. Nobody came. No calls. No SUV. Just a quiet house and a woman standing in it holding a speech no one showed up to hear.

Delphine’s lease ended the following month, exactly as she said. She did not move in with me, obviously. She moved back into our parents’ house, into the room that was going to be Coralie’s sewing room, and that is where the story actually lived, underneath everything.

Priya was the one who said it out loud. Delphine had assumed my house because Delphine has never once had a place of her own. Thirty-one years old, three broken leases, a job she loses every eighteen months, and parents who have bailed her out so many times that she genuinely cannot tell the difference between being helped and being owed. She walked into my living room and saw a solution to her own life, and our parents backed her because backing Delphine is the only parenting they know how to do.

I did not send the footage anywhere. There was nowhere to send it. No fraud, no theft, just a family who mistook my front door for a shared resource because they have mistaken me for one my whole life.

We did not speak for a year. Then my father had a minor heart event in the spring and I went to the hospital, because I am not built the way they are, and I sat with my mother in a waiting room and she thanked me and I understood the thanks would evaporate the moment he was well. It did.

Delphine texts me sometimes now. Never an apology. Usually a link to an apartment she cannot afford, with no words, as if I will simply understand what she is asking.

I have never answered one of those texts. I have also never blocked her, and I have stopped pretending to myself that I know why.

The upstairs bedroom with the big window is my office. The morning sun is everything the kitchen window promised. Some evenings I stand in it and feel the full, uncomplicated fact of a house that is only mine, and some evenings I think about a woman my age who has never once felt that, and I cannot decide which of us the story is really about.
