The call I made was to the airline. Then to a small rented house on the coast near Rosemont that I had looked at eight times during the planning and dismissed as too expensive for all five of us. For four of us, it fit. I moved the reservation, and by noon we were driving toward the ocean instead of sitting at a resort waiting for a man to come back and be recharged.<\/p>\n
Three days was the best three days I had spent as a mother. Nobody needed quiet. Nobody needed space. The six-year-old learned to boogie board. I slept eight hours twice.<\/p>\n
Grant was not crying because we left.<\/p>\n
He was crying because Derek’s trip fell apart on the second day, and with nobody to perform for and no golf to hide behind, Grant found himself alone in a rented condo with three days of silence he had demanded his whole marriage. And he could not stand it. He told me later that he sat there realizing he had begged, for eight years, for exactly the thing that turned out to be unbearable the moment nobody was carrying the weight underneath it.<\/p>\n
That is the part I want to be honest about, because it does not fit the usual shape. He was not sobbing over losing me. He was sobbing over meeting himself.<\/p>\n
We did not divorce. I want to say that plainly because people expect the airport and the lawyer. We went to counseling in the autumn, and Grant did the work, slowly, badly at first, the way people do when they have never once had to. He books the vacations now. He books them wrong, and I let him, because a man learning to plan is more valuable than a plan done right.<\/p>\n
It is not fixed. Some Saturdays he still drifts toward the door and catches himself. I still watch for it. Trust does not come back the way it left.<\/p>\n
The six-year-old is nine now and still talks about the ocean house. Grant asked her last summer what her favorite family trip ever was, and she said the one where it was just us and Mom, and I watched my husband absorb that without defending himself, which four years ago he could not have done.<\/p>\n
