After my husband died, the house was mine and almost nothing else was. The mortgage still had years on it. The savings were thin. His son, nineteen, had been living in the back bedroom rent-free since he dropped out of community college. I asked for five hundred dollars a month. He laughed in the kitchen like I had told a joke. You’re childless, he said. I’m your retirement plan. It’s your job to support me. I did not argue. I went to the hardware store, changed the locks, and stacked his clothes in two boxes by the door.

He pounded on the glass that night and called me names I will not repeat. I let him shout himself empty. In the morning I cleared the room so I could rent it to someone who understood what a house costs. Under the bed, behind a broken suitcase, was a dark gym bag with my first name written on the tag in my husband’s handwriting. My hands shook when I unzipped it. Inside were three bank envelopes, a small jewelry box, and a folded letter addressed only to me. The envelopes held nine thousand four hundred dollars in cash. The box held my mother’s pearls, which I thought had gone missing during the last hospital month. The letter was dated two weeks before he died.

He wrote that his son had already started asking about the deed. He wrote that love is not a pension and that a grown child who calls a widow his retirement plan has already told you who he is. He asked me to keep the cash for the house, not for guilt. He asked me not to explain myself to anyone who treated my grief like an ATM. At the bottom of the bag was a photocopy of a power-of-attorney form with my signature traced in pencil. It had never been signed. The boy had been practicing.

I called the attorney who had handled the will. She said the house was cleanly mine and the unsigned form was evidence, not a claim. I mailed my stepson a copy of the letter and a list of what I was keeping. I did not send money. He tried the family group chat. Relatives called me cold. I let the messages pile up and then I muted the thread. The spare room is rented now to a nurse who pays on the first of the month and never calls me Mom. The pearls are back in my drawer. The cash went to the mortgage. He wanted a retirement plan. He found out the plan was the house his father left to the woman who stayed.
