I did not sign it.

Adult adoption. Both of them, my name where their father’s had been. Rafferty had been planning it since March. He had saved four hundred dollars from a warehouse job for the filing fee and he had asked Ingrid to come on the birthday because he wanted the relatives to watch.

I put the pen down. The room misread it completely. Thaddeus actually smiled.

I said no because of the reason, not the thing. Rafferty’s hands were shaking and Silas was looking at his uncle when he said the word family, not at me. That petition was not about me at all. It was an argument aimed at a man with a blue folder, and I was not going to let my brother’s name come off those boys’ birth certificates to win a dinner party.

Thaddeus left before I finished explaining. So did the cousins. My sister stayed and washed dishes and did not speak, which was as close to an apology as she has managed in fifteen years.

Rafferty found me in the kitchen at midnight and asked whether I had said no because I never wanted them. Eighteen years old, six foot two, and that was the question underneath everything. I told him I had spent fifteen years with the answer and he had somehow ended up with the wrong one, which was my failure and not his.

We filed it two years later. No audience, no lawyer’s fee, a Tuesday morning in the county building with Silas late because he could not find parking. Emmett’s name stayed on the certificates. Ingrid found a way. She said most people never ask whether both are possible.

The trust turned out to be smaller than Thaddeus implied. Eighty-one thousand each after his management fees, which were legal and disgusting. The boys spent it on tuition and a used truck.

Silas has a daughter now. She is two. She calls me Grandma, which nobody taught her and nobody has corrected.

I never got the speech I spent fifteen years not admitting I wanted. What I got was a kid at midnight in a kitchen, asking the wrong question, and a chance to answer it properly.
