“The foundation’s endowment has been mine since March. I’m here as your principal donor.”

Six hundred and forty million. Callum’s grandmother left it in a blind trust naming her grandson’s spouse, not her son, and she wrote the terms in 2009 after watching Bartholomew mortgage her house without asking. Eleven years of the Aldermont charity gala, the chandeliers, the brass doors, the gowns, had been running on distributions from a trust I inherited the moment my husband’s death certificate was filed. They had thrown me onto a lawn one day later.

Bartholomew sat down. Not dramatically. He just found a chair and sat, and he looked at his hands for a long time. Marguerite said my name twice and then stopped.

Here is what I did not expect. I had rehearsed that sentence for eight months. Driving. In the shower. Folding my nursing scrubs in a rented studio in Foxwell. And when I finally said it, standing in an emerald gown in a room of four hundred people, I felt nothing at all. Not triumph. Not relief. Just the flat tiredness of a woman who had wanted her husband back and had been given money instead.

I left before the dessert course.

I dissolved the gala the following year and moved the endowment to a paediatric cardiology fund at the hospital where I worked nights for six years. Marguerite sold the estate in the spring. Vivienne’s video is still online somewhere, I assume. I have never looked for it.

Vivienne wrote to me last month. She is thirty-one and working, actually working, at a title company in Delham. She did not ask for anything. She wrote that she watched her own footage recently and could not recognize the person holding the phone. I have not answered her yet. I think I will.

The wedding album is on my shelf. The mud never fully came out of the bottom corner and I have stopped trying.

People keep telling me I won. I have six hundred and forty million dollars and a photograph of a man’s face I had to wipe clean while kneeling in a puddle. I would trade the first for one more hour of the second, and nobody at that gala would have believed me if I had said so out loud.
