His name was Owen. She married him at the courthouse at eleven that morning with two strangers as witnesses. At half past one he was crossing Dunmore Avenue to get the car, and a delivery van went through the light.

He was alive. That is the part I could not get her to say on the bench. He was in surgery at Saint Alban’s and had been for two hours, and she had been discharged from the scene with a scraped elbow and no phone, because her phone was in the car. The shoe came off in the road. A paramedic handed it to her and she had not been able to put it down since.

The two months of silence made sense on the drive to the hospital. Owen had been diagnosed in March. Stage three, aggressive, twenty-nine years old. She had spent eight weeks going to oncology appointments alone because she was terrified that if she told our mother, it would become a family project, and she wanted him to be hers first. They married at the courthouse so she would be next of kin before the first round of treatment started on Monday.

He came out of surgery at nine that night. Pelvis, femur, and a ruptured spleen. He spent eleven days in the ICU and the oncology start was pushed to June.

That was two years ago. He is alive. In remission, fourteen months now, and he walks with a limp that is from the van rather than the cancer, which he finds very funny and nobody else does. Nadia went back to work in the autumn. They had a proper wedding last September, in our mother’s garden, forty people, and he wore the same shoes because she had kept the other one in her closet the entire time.

I still think about that bench. My sister in a wedding dress in the rain, holding the only piece of him she had been allowed to keep, unable to explain because she had spent two months learning how to carry things alone.

She got him back. I know how rarely that happens, and I am not going to pretend the ending was earned by anything either of them did. Some people simply get lucky, and the rest of us just hope to be the one who answers the phone.
