The affidavit named Bertram. The handwriting examiner named Rosalind.

Nineteen documents, sixty-five thousand dollars, all in her hand. She had been forging her husband’s signature as well as her son’s since 2018, because Bertram’s construction business had been failing for six years and she could not survive the neighborhood knowing it. The cigar, the pearls, the movers, the whole performance in my foyer was a man who genuinely believed his wife had been managing their finances well.

He found out in a sheriff’s interview room. I was told he sat down on the floor.

She took a plea in April. No jail, given her age, restitution over nine years, and a felony on a woman who had spent forty years being introduced as Mrs. Bertram Winslow. He filed for divorce in September and moved into a rental in Chesterton. He is seventy-three.

He wrote to me in November. Four lines, block capitals, no apology, because I do not think the man has one in him. He asked whether he could visit Theodore’s grave without running into me. I wrote back that the cemetery is not mine and he never needed my permission. He goes on Tuesdays. I go Sundays. We have never overlapped, which I assume is deliberate on both sides.

Theodore knew all of it before his last deployment. That is what took me the longest to sit with. He built the affidavit, the survivorship deed, the sealed file with Colonel Hargrove, and he never told me, because telling me would have meant saying out loud that his mother was a thief and his father a fool, and he could not make himself do it in the eleven months he had left.

I still live here. The medals are back on the wall. The scorch mark from that cigar is still in the hardwood by the table and I have never had it sanded out.

Some mornings I stand in that foyer and I am not sure I won anything. A woman is a felon, a marriage of forty years is over, and my husband is still dead. What I got was a house, and the knowledge that he spent his last year at war thinking about how to keep me safe from the people who raised him.
