It was the loan application. My father’s signature, my mother’s signature, and on line fourteen, under verified household income, my salary. Not as a contribution. As his. He had listed me as a dependent earner in the same household and attached two of my pay stubs, which he had photographed off my desk in August. The bank had approved a hundred and ninety thousand dollars against a house they could not afford on their own, using income belonging to a thirty-year-old woman who was never told.

I did not report it. My attorney said I could. I sat in his office for an hour and could not make myself sign the complaint, because the same signature that committed the fraud was on every birthday card I ever received. That was my choice and I have never been sure it was the right one.

So it went the other way instead. The bank restructured nothing. My parents sold their house in April at a loss and moved into a two-bedroom rental in Pellsworth. Sabrina’s house was never at risk, because Sabrina’s name was on that deed alone, and my father had made certain of that in a way he never once thought to do for me.

She kept it. That is the part people always want changed. She sent me a text in February that said she felt terrible, and another in June that said she hoped I understood it was not her fault, and then she stopped. She still has the breakfast island. My mother lives eleven minutes away from her and sees the grandchildren every Sunday.

My father called in August. He did not apologize. He asked whether I might co-sign something small, just to help them get back on their feet, because the rental application had been difficult. I said no and he hung up before I finished the word.

I finished my accounting degree in May. I passed two sections of the CPA exam in the fall. The studio is still tiny and I can still almost reach the counter from the couch.

The seventy-five dollars is taped inside the blue folder, on the front page, above twenty-eight months of statements nobody ever asked to see. He was right about one thing. Nothing comes for free. He just never worked out who had been paying.
