He had been in my kitchen because of the seventy-two hours nobody counted. On Monday he had a cardiac catheterization at the medical center four states away, at a hospital I chose, with a cardiologist I found. I flew him out, drove him to every appointment, and he was staying with me to recover. Rosalind knew. She had been told twice. She had assumed a man his age going in for a heart procedure would not come out, and she had built the rest around that assumption. Ambrose had never found anything. Ambrose was at his granddaughter’s in Tulsa.<\/p>\n
The locks were real, though. They had already been changed by seven that morning. My father drove home that weekend, called a locksmith himself, and sat on his own porch waiting. What he said to them when they arrived, he has never repeated to me.<\/p>\n
He rewrote the will in February. Not to punish her, he said, and I believe him. He put the house into a trust that cannot be sold while he is alive, named Ambrose as trustee, and divided everything else evenly between his daughters. He told me the money was never the lesson. Being trusted with it was, and he would not hand that to someone who had planned his funeral to get a truck.<\/p>\n
Rosalind has not spoken to either of us in two years. Corbin left her last spring, which surprised nobody.<\/p>\n
Dad is seventy-nine. He has two stents and more energy than he had at seventy. He comes out every October and stays three weeks, and we make bacon badly and argue about the fishing report.<\/p>\n
I spent a decade being called the daughter who ran away, and I let it stand because correcting it felt like begging.
