It was a net. Fine black mesh, the kind people use over fruit trees, stretched on a frame of cheap conduit and angled so anything coming over his railing would roll, gently and without damage, back toward the wall of the building and into a shallow tray. Beside the tray I set a small chalkboard on an easel, facing up at his balcony, with a number written on it. That morning the number was 1.

He came out at 6:11 and tossed. It rolled. I said nothing at all. I drank my coffee and looked at the sunrise. When he leaned over the railing to see what had happened, I wiped the board and wrote 2.

I did that for eleven days. No shouting, no hallway confrontations, nothing anyone could describe as a scene. Just a woman in a robe, a cup of coffee, and a number that kept climbing. Every Sunday I emptied the tray into a clear bag, labeled it with the dates, and put it in my freezer. Not for revenge. For the housing board, because I had already filed the complaint and they had already asked for documentation.

On the twelfth day, the board met. I brought four bags, thirty-one photographs, and the ruined cushion cover. He brought nothing, because he had assumed a woman who never complained would never escalate. He was fined and warned in writing.

Two weeks later he knocked on my door holding a small potted lavender. He did not smile and he did not joke. He said his mother had died in February and he had been drinking tea on that balcony every morning and night because it was her habit, not his, and that he had stopped noticing anything below him for months. He apologized properly, which I had stopped expecting anyone to do.

I told him I was sorry about his mother. Then I told him the net was staying.

He brings the tea bags down himself now, once a week, to the compost bin in the courtyard, and we sometimes talk for a minute on the stairs. Last month he signed for my packages.

Fourteen years I was quiet in that building because I thought being easy to live near was the same as being respected. It is not. People will look straight past you until you give them something they cannot look past. I never raised my voice once. I just stopped letting myself be invisible, and the whole building learned my name.
