The segment was about the county’s new palliative care wing. The reporter said it had been funded by an anonymous donor who had now agreed to be named, and then my face filled the screen. I had signed the papers in a hospital corridor in Germany, three weeks before Arthur died, in a chair outside his room at two in the morning. The house, the land, Arthur’s patent royalties, all of it. Every asset except a small annuity I kept for myself.

Arthur asked me to do it. That was the part none of them knew. In his last lucid week he told me he had watched our children circle him like weather for two years, asking about the will, never about the pain. He said he could not bear the thought of me spending my last years being useful to people who were only waiting.

They shouted for about an hour. Warren said I had stolen from my own grandchildren. Cordelia cried, which I had not seen her do at the funeral she did not attend. My sister called me selfish. I let them finish, and then I said one thing: nobody came to the airport. Then I went upstairs again.

They were gone by morning. So were the labels, torn off and left on the kitchen table in a small angry pile.

The wing opened in September. It has fourteen beds and a garden with a bench that has Arthur’s name on it. I volunteer there three days a week, reading to people who have nobody left to read to them. I have learned more names in eight months than I learned in the last twenty years of family dinners.

My granddaughter, Imogen, came in April. Nineteen, no agenda, just a bus ticket. She said she had been ashamed since the night of the news and had spent four months working out how to say so. She volunteers with me now on Saturdays. We do not talk about the others much.

I sold the house and took a small apartment near the hospital.

For forty-three years I was the one who held everything together, and I mistook being depended upon for being loved. They are not the same. The airport taught me that, and the garden taught me the rest. Nobody is required to earn their own family. But you are allowed, at seventy-one, to finally choose where your life goes, and to walk in somewhere and be greeted by name.
