I did nothing dramatic. I exercised rights I already held.

Monday I called a special meeting as majority member and removed Julian as managing partner, which required my signature and nobody else’s. Tuesday the employee trust voted with me, one hundred four people who had spent two years watching him take three-hour lunches. Wednesday the bank was notified of the change in signatory authority, and every transfer since February was flagged. Thursday the forensic auditors arrived, which was the part I found almost funny, since auditing was the career I gave up to fund him. Friday his card declined at a restaurant. That is how he found out.

Four hundred and eighteen thousand had moved in five months. Colette’s share was dressed up as a consulting agreement for work nobody could describe. She returned it in nine days without being asked twice, then sent me the unedited video from her own phone. I have never used it. I never needed to.

Kesterling cleared eleven million last year. I am there four days a week, my name is on the door, and the employee trust now holds eighteen percent. His mother sent a card at Christmas. I read it. I did not answer.

Colette and I have lunch twice a year. She was the first person in that family to say the word sorry out loud, and she said it without being prompted, which counts for something.

For seven years I let a man tell rooms full of people that I stayed home, and I corrected him exactly never, because I believed the paperwork would speak for itself when it mattered. It did. But the paperwork was never the point. A woman can hold fifty-six percent of something and still be a punch line, right up until she decides to stop laughing along. I stopped at a dinner table, quietly, with my fork down, and I have never once wanted the ring back.
