Rowena called me on the twenty-sixth. She had not been at the dinner either. She left after forty minutes because Dad started the same joke again, and this time nobody said anything, because I was not there to say it. That was when she told me what she had overheard in the kitchen. Dad wanted the bungalow deeded to both of them jointly so it would pass into their estate, and Mom had already spoken to a realtor about listing it in three years. They were not planning to live in it. They were planning to sell it.

My attorney confirmed on the twenty-eighth that no deed had ever been delivered. The title was clean and entirely mine. I did not sell the bungalow and I did not give it away in some grand gesture. I did something slower. I spent four months working with the county housing office, got the place certified as transitional housing, and leased it to the program at a rate that covers the taxes and nothing else. It houses one family at a time, for up to eighteen months, while they get back on their feet.

Priya and Amara were the first. Priya works in payroll again now, at a hospital system, and they moved into their own apartment last spring. Amara kept the same school the entire time. Before they left, she taped a paper snowflake inside the kitchen cabinet door. The second family found it and left it there. So did the third.

My father has never apologized. My mother called in April asking whether the decision was final, which was her way of asking whether I had gotten over it. I told her the house was already full. She has not brought it up since. Rowena and I talk almost every day now, which is new, and which is the part of this I am most grateful for.

I spent years being the one who made things easier for everyone, and I mistook being useful for being wanted. Nobody has to earn their seat at Christmas dinner. What I understand now is that a home is not a gift you hand to people who are counting the days until you stop showing up. It is something you give to whoever is honest enough to say they need one good break.
