That night I slept on the fold-out couch of Nadia, a charge nurse from my unit, with my aunt’s photograph propped against a lamp. At 8:05 the next morning I called the bank. The account was not a personal savings account. Aunt Philippa had opened it as a trust account, with a professional trustee from the bank’s fiduciary office listed beside my name. I was the beneficiary. The trustee was the legal owner. Garrett had not taken money from his sister. He had taken it from a trust, using my card and my passwords, and the bank was required to report it the same day.

The trust officer, a quiet man named Mr. Abernathy, read me my aunt’s condition over the phone. She wrote it in 2019, one year before she died. If anyone in my family ever withdrew from this account without my written consent, the trustee was to freeze it, recover the funds, and refer the matter to the authorities without waiting for my permission. Then he read the last line she had added in her own hand: She will want to protect them. Do not let her. By Thursday afternoon, a detective had called Garrett at work.

Garrett stopped laughing then. So did my parents. Most of the money had gone into a truck and a deposit on an apartment Kaylee had wanted instead of my bedroom. The bank recovered forty-one thousand from accounts that had not been spent yet. Garrett signed a restitution agreement for the remaining fifteen, to avoid charges, and he pays three hundred dollars a month. Kaylee left him before the first payment. My mother called me crying and asked how I could do this to my own brother. I told her I had done nothing at all. Aunt Philippa did it, eight years ago, because she saw exactly what they would become.

I found a small apartment near the hospital and started graduate school in January. The photograph sits on my new dresser. Last month my father came to the NICU during visiting hours, stood at the glass watching the babies, and said he was sorry he never once asked what my work was like. It was not enough. It was a start. For years I believed I was only worth keeping while I was useful. My aunt knew better. She saw me clearly enough to protect me from my own kindness, and now I finally see myself that way too.
