I opened the door. My father was holding the newspaper, but not the front page. He had folded it to page six, where the interview continued. The reporter had asked who stood beside me at the funeral, and I had answered plainly: Graham’s parents and my Aunt Rosalind. Then she asked about my own parents. I gave one sentence. They were at my sister’s birthday dinner. That was all. By noon, his church, his golf club, and Delaney’s fiancé’s family had all read it. “You humiliated us,” he said. I told him I had only described one Saturday. They were the ones who lived it.

Delaney stepped up behind him, eyes red, and asked whether this meant I could still help with the wedding. I almost laughed. I explained, calmly, that there was no family money to discuss. Every dollar belonged to the foundation, and the board had been signed and filed that morning. Graham’s parents. Aunt Rosalind. A traffic safety engineer from the state. My father asked where his name was. I told him it was exactly where he had put it in July. Then I closed the door, gently, and sat on the floor beside Jonah’s crooked sneakers until the porch went quiet.

My mother came alone in May, to the foundation’s first memorial walk. She did not ask to speak. She stood at the very back in a plain gray coat, and afterward she left white roses on all three graves with a card that said only: I should have been there. I am so sorry. It was not everything. But it was true, and it was hers, and I kept the card. My father has never written. Delaney married in June. I sent a gift and did not attend, and I found I carried no anger about it at all.

In October, the first median barriers funded by the foundation were installed along that stretch of I-40. I stood on the shoulder with Graham’s father while the crews set the last section in place. Clara’s school jacket still hangs by the door. I have stopped moving it. For months I waited for the people who were supposed to love me to finally show up. What I learned is that family is not who shares your blood. It is who drives five hours through the dark when no one called them, and stands on your side of the church when it is nearly empty.
