“…11-C. Beside my mother. It has been reserved in his name since 1996, and it is the only grave I will ever sign for.” Nobody moved. Glenda stayed in the doorway with her hand still on the frame, and for the first time in twenty-seven years she did not have a sentence ready. The pastor looked at the program in his hands, folded it once, and quietly told the funeral director to change the route. We buried my father at 1:15 under a maple my mother had loved, and Glenda stood at the very back of the gathering, alone, the whole time.

When the last car pulled away, Mrs. Haverly walked across the grass holding an envelope. Dad had left it with her in April, the same week he told me to go to the cemetery and not the funeral home. Inside was one page in his handwriting. He wrote that the Sunday calls from the garage were the most cowardly thing he ever did and the only thing he never missed. He wrote that he put the plot in my name at seven because he already knew he was not a brave man, and he wanted one promise to Iris that his own weakness could not undo.

Glenda came to the cemetery office six weeks later. Mrs. Haverly called me first and asked if I wanted to be there. I did. Glenda sold 13-D back without argument. Then she sat in the plastic chair by the window and told me she had spent twenty-seven years jealous of a dead woman, and of the little girl who walked into her kitchen wearing that woman’s face. She did not ask me to forgive her. I did not offer. But I told her she could visit the grave whenever she liked, and in October I found fresh tomatoes left beside the stone.

I go on Sundays now, at the hour he used to call. I sit between the two of them and tell them about my week, out loud, in the open, with nobody to hide from. For twenty-seven years I was the daughter from before, the one kept on the phone in a garage. My father could not stand beside me in daylight while he was alive. So he did the one quiet thing he could, and made sure that in the end, nobody could keep me out.
