Dad was marrying his third wife in a rented hall that still smelled like the last party. I was ten. My stepbrother was six. We had been handed matching shirts and told to smile for pictures we did not ask to be in. When the preacher asked if anyone objected, the room did the usual polite nothing. Then the six-year-old beside me raised his hand as if he were waiting to be called on in class.

Dad laughed the short laugh he used when a child was about to embarrass him. He asked why. My stepbrother said, “Because.” That was all. The guests waited for a joke. It did not come. Dad asked again, sharper. The boy looked at the woman in white, then at Dad, and finished the sentence the way children do when they have been paying attention longer than the adults wanted. “Because you told Mom this was the last time. You said it in the kitchen. I heard you.”

The hall made the sound of people trying not to look at one another. The bride’s smile stayed on her face a few seconds after it had stopped being real. Dad started to explain about grown-up promises and how kids misunderstand. I watched my stepbrother’s hand come down. He had not meant to ruin a wedding. He had meant to tell the truth in the only room where the question had been asked out loud. The ceremony continued because adults can push a service past a child. The marriage did not last long enough to make him a liar.

Years later I asked him if he remembered that day. He did. He said he had not known the word object. He only knew the word because. Because a promise had already been used. Because nobody had asked the two boys in the stiff shirts whether they wanted another beginning. Dad still tells the story as if it were cute. We tell it differently. A six-year-old raised his hand in a room full of adults and gave the shortest honest answer he had. The rest of us spent years learning how to finish it.
