Genevieve Larkspur. My mother. Dead thirteen years.

Beckett had used her name in the second year of the lease because it matched mine on an old insurance record and because he assumed nobody would ever read that far. He needed a second driver covered without a credit check, and Rosalie would not have passed one.

Thaddeus made the call. My son answered laughing. Then he stopped, and the silence on that speaker went on long enough that I noticed the clock above the service desk. He brought the car in at 3:40 with Rosalie in the passenger seat, and neither of them looked at me in the lobby.

The white sedan belonged to a hospice nurse. That is the part I had wrong, loudly, in my own head, for three days. Rosalie’s mother had been dying in their spare room since February. Nobody told me, because telling me meant needing me again, and Rosalie had decided somewhere along the way that needing me was the same as owing me.

She was not entirely wrong to think it. I had been keeping a ledger. Not on paper, but I had kept one for eleven years, and people can feel a ledger in a room even when nobody names it.

Her mother died in June. I went to the service. I sat in the back and left before the reception, and Rosalie followed me into the parking lot and stood there a while before she said thank you for coming. Then she said my name. Not Beckett’s mom. Coralie.

He bought a used Corolla in August with his own credit, which turned out to be fine, which he had never once bothered to check. He pays for it himself. He calls on Sundays now, and he does not want anything.

I did not forgive anybody dramatically. I just put the ledger down, and that took longer than turning in a car.

Thirty-nine months I paid for a vehicle so my son could feel like a man in his own driveway, and I never once asked myself why I allowed it. The answer is that being needed was the only chair anyone in that family ever pulled out for me. A woman with a checkbook gets remembered on the fifteenth of the month. A woman with a name gets remembered on Sundays. I had to stop writing checks before anyone could learn the difference.
