It was a drawing folder. Inside, between crayon pictures of our porch flowers, was a single sheet of lined paper in my father’s handwriting: Rosalind and Wren may live in the carriage house as long as they need. Whatever she fixes is hers. Signed, dated, and folded into quarters.

Wren had taken it out of a kitchen drawer eight months earlier because she liked that her name was written on something, and she had kept it with her drawings the way children keep anything that feels important. She was four when she took it. She was seven when she raised her hand.

Judge Abernathy read it twice. Then he asked my mother to return to the stand and asked her one question: whether she had been aware of the document. She said no. My father did not look up from the table. The eviction was denied, and the court found that eighty-six thousand dollars of improvements had created an equitable interest in the property.

We settled in December rather than litigate further. My parents deeded the carriage house and the quarter acre under it to me. I signed away any future claim on their estate, which cost me nothing I wanted.

Bridget renewed her lease. She has not spoken to me in three years. My father has, twice, and both times he apologized for something small to avoid apologizing for the large thing. My mother never has.

Wren is eleven. She has been in remission for four years. The string lights are still up because she refuses to take them down, and the flowers beside the porch have gone feral and taken over half the walk.

Last spring she asked me whether I was sad that Grandma does not visit, and I told her the truth, which is yes, and also that some people can only love you while you are useful to them, and that this is a fact about them and never about you.

I spent thirty-four years being the daughter you call when something needs fixing, and I never once wondered why nobody called when I needed anything. It took a seven-year-old with a folder of crayon drawings to show a courtroom what I had been too trained to say out loud. A home is not what you are permitted to stay in. It is what nobody can take from you.
