The answer was smaller and sadder than any theory I invented that night. Consuelo cleaned offices. One of them belonged to the firm handling Gregory’s refinancing. For eleven months she had emptied bins beside a man who took loud phone calls after hours, and the first time she heard him say my name she stopped moving in the middle of the floor. She had found me on a registry four years earlier and had never once approached me. She told herself she was waiting for the right moment. Then she started hearing the wrong ones.

Gregory signed nothing the next day. The revocation reached the title company at 4:40 that afternoon, and the buyer’s deposit went back on Monday. He came home on Wednesday and found me sitting at the kitchen table with the listing printed out, all nine photographs, including one of Nora’s shelf. He tried three different explanations in under a minute. I did not interrupt any of them.

The debt was real. Two point four million, most of it personal guarantees on a business that had been failing since before Nora started school. He had chosen a mistress, a second life, and a small Toledo apartment for his daughter rather than one honest conversation with his wife. The divorce took fourteen months. I kept the apartment. He kept what was left of himself.

Consuelo was sixteen in that photograph. Her father drove her to the agency and waited in the car. She told me all of it over one winter, in pieces, at the same café table, and I learned that she had named me Paloma and that nobody had ever called me that out loud.

She lives eleven minutes from us now. Nora calls her Abuela and has since roughly the third visit, having consulted no one. They make tamales badly every December and the kitchen never recovers.

I have thought often about how close I came to boarding that bus. Fourteen years with a man who studied me carefully enough to know exactly which small apartment I would survive in, and a stranger who studied me carefully enough to stop me on a platform.

One of them watched me to measure what I could be reduced to. The other watched me because she had never stopped. That is the whole difference, and I spent forty-one years not knowing there was one. Being seen is not attention. It is someone deciding, quietly and for years, that you were worth keeping track of.
