I did not look at the keys until the van was gone. When I did, I understood why my hand had been shaking. The brass compass tag was Hollis’s. My husband had carried that keyring for thirty-eight years, hanging by the apartment door every night of our marriage, and it had gone into a drawer the week he died. Vivienne had not copied a key from my new house at all. She had copied the originals, months before I ever saw the cliffs, from a drawer in a home she had no business opening.

The locksmith’s records confirmed it. Three separate visits over two years. My attorney found the rest: an appraiser had walked through the old apartment in March under a name I did not recognize, and Vivienne had twice called my physician’s office asking whether anyone had evaluated my decision-making. The cream card was not a warning she left. It was a draft. The same stationery sat in a box in my guest room, where she had written and rewritten a sentence until it sounded kind enough to say out loud.

Julian came back in November, alone, no rehearsed apology in his pocket. He sat on the veranda where the lanterns had hung and told me he had signed a limited power of attorney in the spring without reading past the first page, and that he had spent eleven years managing a woman he was afraid to contradict. He did not ask about the trust. He asked whether his father had suffered at the end. It was the first question he had asked me in a decade that was not about money. They separated in March. I gave him coffee and two hours, which turned out to be what he had actually come for.

Last month I held the anniversary dinner again. Paper lanterns, citrus tarts, white lilies by the staircase, the same trio near the sunroom. Julian arrived at six and knocked, and waited, which is a small thing that took him forty-one years to learn. The preservation trust leaves this house to a coastal foundation, with one modest line for him if he is still knocking in ten years. I keep Hollis’s compass tag on the hook by the door now, where it belongs. The women in my family were raised to be inherited from. I chose, quite late and quite calmly, to be known instead.
