The bottle cracked under my shoe and they both turned. I stood in the alley in my slippers, certain in that half-second that thirty-one years were ending in the worst possible way. Then the woman with the blue hair said my name, and I did not know her, and Desmond stepped toward me with a face that was not guilt. It was panic of a completely different kind. “You weren’t supposed to see this until Saturday,” he said.

The woman was Renata, and she was not a mistress. She ran a small workshop three streets over, and the brown paper package was the fourth of five deliveries. Inside were pieces of a music box. Not any music box. Thirty-one years earlier, on our honeymoon, my grandmother’s music box had been crushed in a hotel luggage mishap, the one thing of hers I had left, and I had cried over it for a week and then never mentioned it again because there was nothing to be done. Desmond had remembered. For our thirty-first anniversary, which fell that Saturday, he had tracked down a restorer who works from photographs and salvaged fragments, and he had been smuggling the broken remnants he’d secretly kept in a shoebox for three decades out to her workshop, one piece a night, hidden in the trash bag so I would never see him carrying anything, because I go through everything that leaves the house and he knew it.

The “she still doesn’t know” was me. The “until Saturday” was the anniversary. The trash duty, the sudden helpfulness, the fifteen minutes, all of it was a man who had never willingly taken out the garbage in his life doing it every single night for a week so he could hand pieces of my grandmother to a stranger who was rebuilding them.

Renata finished it Friday. Desmond gave it to me Saturday morning, a day early, because I had ruined the surprise in an alley in my slippers, and it played the same tune it played in my grandmother’s kitchen when I was six. I have not cried like that since the honeymoon.

We are thirty-four years married now. He still takes out the trash sometimes, and every single time, for one stupid second, my heart jumps.

For thirty-one years I thought I knew every ordinary thing about that man, down to how far he would go to avoid a twenty-foot walk. I followed him into the dark certain I was about to learn he was someone else. He was exactly who he had always been, only more so, carrying my grief out to be repaired under the cover of a chore he despised, so quietly I nearly mistook devotion for betrayal. I spent a week believing the worst of a man who had spent thirty-one years keeping a broken music box in a shoebox, waiting for the right moment. Being loved is not always loud, and it is rarely what it looks like from an upstairs window. Sometimes it is a husband in the alley at nine forty-five, handing your whole childhood, piece by piece, to a stranger with blue hair.
