The man at the gas station was the thread I pulled. When I asked him where he’d heard it, he told me Marlene had spent weeks telling anyone who would listen that her grandparents once owned my two acres and that a city outsider had bought it out from under her family through a crooked deal. It was a good story. It was also entirely invented. I went back to the county, and this time I did not ask about my line. I asked about hers. Marlene’s family had never owned a single foot of that land. The parcel she claimed her grandparents lost had belonged, for sixty years, to the Ellery family, the same Mr. Ellery who sold me the house and walked me to every stake.

That was the piece that ended it. Mr. Ellery was seventy-nine and still living twenty minutes away, and when I told him what was being said in town, he did something I did not expect. He came to the diner on a Saturday morning, sat down among the people who had gone quiet when I walked in, and told them plainly that his family had held that ground since 1961, that no one named Marlene’s grandparents had ever owned it, and that the woman spreading the story had knocked on his door two months earlier trying to get him to say otherwise. He had refused. She had told the town he agreed.

The story collapsed in a single morning. A town that had been ready to believe the outsider was a thief was even quicker to turn once one of their own set the record straight.

I filed for the fence removal and the trespass, and with the county records and Mr. Ellery’s statement, it was not close. The court ordered the fence down at her expense and enjoined her from entering the property. She took it down herself, badly, over a weekend, while I did not watch.

Marlene moved within the year. Not because of the ruling, I think, but because a person who builds a life out of a story cannot stay in a place that has heard the truth.

My garden came back. The tomatoes she’d trapped on the far side survived, oddly, and I moved them home myself. Mr. Ellery comes for dinner now, first Sunday of the month, and walks the line with me every spring out of habit neither of us wants to break.

She spread her version of me through a whole town and nearly made it stick, because a confident story is louder than a quiet fact. What she never understood is that the land does not care what anyone remembers or repeats. The stakes are law, an old man told me the day I signed. She was willing to go all the way to take what was never hers. I only had to stand on what was mine, and let one honest man say so out loud, and the truth held exactly where it had always been buried.
