The engraving was a name and a date. The name was Warrick Holloway, and the date was the day my son was born. I did not understand it standing in my kitchen, and it took the rest of that strange week to understand it at all. The homeless man against the wall was not a stranger who had wandered into our lives. His name was Warrick. Eleven years earlier, on the day Silas was born, he had been a session guitarist and a very wealthy one, and he had lost all of it, slowly, to an illness and a series of decisions he told Silas about on that sidewalk in the twenty minutes my son sat and listened. The gold bar was not a fortune he happened to have. It was the last thing he owned, the one thing he had carried through years of shelters and doorways because he could not bring himself to sell it, and he had it engraved decades ago with his own name and the date he swore he would turn his life around, which happened, by a coincidence I still cannot fit into words, to be the day my son came into the world.<\/p>\n
He gave it to Silas because my son handed him an envelope of guitar money without being asked, and because a boy who talks to you for twenty minutes and sees a person instead of a problem is rarer than gold. He wrote in a second note, tucked under the plastic, that he had watched people walk past him for eleven years and that Silas was the first child who had sat down beside him on the pavement.<\/p>\n
We found Warrick. Silas insisted, and I was not going to say no. He had not vanished. He was still in the neighborhood, and my son wanted to give the gold bar back, and Warrick would not take it. So we did the only thing that felt right. We sold it, together, all three of us, and it was worth far more than any of us guessed, and we used part of it to help Warrick into a small apartment and a program, and the rest went into an account with my son’s name on it that Warrick himself asked us to open.<\/p>\n
Silas got his guitar. Warrick taught him. That is the part I still cannot quite believe. A man who lost everything sat in my living room on Tuesday afternoons and taught my eleven-year-old the instrument he had once played for a living.<\/p>\n
Warrick has been housed for two years now. He has his dog, a small place, and a standing seat at our Sunday table.<\/p>\n
He told me once that the day my son sat down next to him was the first day in eleven years that anybody had made him feel like he was still there. My boy gave away two years of savings and got back something none of us can put a number on.
