She lifted the tape and it was not a tattoo. Or it was, but not the kind Warren had spent three days imagining. Across the inside of her forearm, in my mother’s exact handwriting, were seven words. Keep the porch light on for me. It was the last thing my mother ever wrote, on the back of a grocery list, in the hospital, the afternoon before she died. Nadia had found it in the kitchen drawer the week of the funeral and taken it to an artist who reproduces handwriting precisely, line for line, pressure for pressure. The four hundred and ten dollars, every cent she had saved since she was thirteen, was so she would never lose the last thing her grandmother’s hand ever made.<\/p>\n
I understood then why she had not cried at the funeral. She had not been unmoved. She had been carrying it somewhere the rest of us could not see, the same way she carried everything, quietly, until she found a way to make it permanent so it could never be taken.<\/p>\n
Warren put his hand over his mouth and left the room. When he came back his eyes were red and he did not say a word about September or the police. He sat down next to her and asked, very gently, if he could see it again. She let him hold her wrist under the lamp for a long time.<\/p>\n
I apologised for the worst sentence I have ever said to my child. She told me it was okay, that she knew I was drowning. A fifteen-year-old, forgiving me for that, in that week. I will spend a long time earning it.<\/p>\n
The funeral bill got paid. Warren picked up weekend shifts and I sold my mother’s car, and we handled it the way she would have, quietly, without a fuss.<\/p>\n
