Dad left when I was three. Twenty-eight years later he stood on my step thinner than the man in the one photograph I kept, and said he was dying and had nowhere else to go. I let him in. I paid the clinic bills, the prescriptions, the extra groceries. I told myself I was doing it for the child I had been, not for the man who vanished. He slept in the spare room and thanked me in a voice that always sounded half packed to leave again.

One night I heard him on the phone, speaking low. She will not check until I am gone. I stood in the hall until the call ended. The next morning I found an envelope in the lining of his coat. My hands shook before I finished the first page. It was not a scheme against me. It was a letter to a lawyer and a copy of a life policy taken out two months after he arrived. I was the only beneficiary. Behind that were smaller pages: money orders sent to my mother for years under a name I did not know, and a note in his uneven writing. He had been ashamed to stay. He had been more ashamed to ask. The call was to the insurer. He did not want me to learn the policy existed while he was still eating food I bought. He thought I would believe he was paying rent on forgiveness.

I sat on the floor of the spare room with the papers in my lap. Anger did not disappear. A stack of late checks does not return a childhood. But the story I had been telling myself—that he came only to empty my house—was not the whole file. He came because he was dying. He hid the envelope because he still did not know how to be seen.

I did not announce what I had found. I put the papers back and kept paying what the days required. When he died six weeks later, the policy did what he said it would. I used part of it to clear the bills his illness had added to my table. The rest I left untouched for a long time. I did not call it a happy ending. I called it a finished page. He left once without a word. The second time he left a record, and I was the one who got to decide what it was worth.
