Renata did not understand the sentence I gave her. Ask your mother why the venue cost zero. She thought I was being cryptic. I was being exact. Beatriz had told the whole wedding party that she, personally, had charmed a Portuguese village into hosting for free, and had let that story become the centre of her own importance for four months. There was no charm. There was my father’s cousin Duarte, holding nineteen rooms for the name Botelho, refusing my deposit because we were blood. The venue cost zero because it was my family’s village, and my family’s name, and the moment my father was no longer coming, it was simply gone. Beatriz had been taking credit for a door that only my father’s blood could open.

The bank draft was the part they never saw coming. My mother’s twenty-one thousand had been written as a conditional gift, drafted that way by the man at our local bank who has known my parents thirty years, because I asked him to when I first sensed something was wrong. The condition was plain in the paperwork nobody read. The funds supported my parents’ participation in the wedding. Remove them, and the draft was recalled before it ever cleared. Beatriz had been holding a cheque that dissolved in her hand the day she reassigned Room Three.

Rafael called me from the airport in Lisbon. Padlocked gates, no rooms for forty miles, a bride’s family who had flown first class to a wedding that no longer existed. He did not shout. He asked me why. I told him he already knew, and that he had said it himself behind a broken screen door about a cobblestone street.

The engagement ended within the year. Not because of me. Because a marriage does not easily begin on the day both families learn what the other is made of.

I flew my parents out in June, business class, the two of them, for a month. Duarte gave Dad Room Three. I have a photograph of my father in the charcoal suit from 1981, standing in the stone lane, saying his own father’s name out loud to an old woman who, it turned out, remembered him.

Rafael and I are slow, and mending. He came to the salon last winter and swept the floor while we talked, which is his way.

They looked at my parents and saw two people too old and too homemade to matter, cargo to be refunded and upgraded away. They never once asked whose village it was, whose name held the rooms, whose twenty-three years of sixty-dollar months had paid for the whole dream. My father was never the one who would slow the wedding down. He was the reason the wedding could happen at all, and the day they forgot that, the door simply closed, because it had only ever been his to open.
