I had signed it eighteen months earlier as a blank corporate authorisation during a week of closings, one of forty pages my mother had asked me to initial, and she had held it back and had it repurposed. Delphine read my name at the bottom of a page renouncing any claim to me or to my family and she believed, entirely reasonably, that I had arranged it and had been too cowardly to say so.<\/p>\n
She was standing in that terminal because she was finally leaving Michigan for good. Seven years of two jobs and one room, and the boys are called Emrys and Tobias, and the one with the notch in his eyebrow is the one who does not talk much.<\/p>\n
I did not fly to Richmond. I called the CFO from the floor beside her suitcase and killed the deal, and then I called a lawyer instead of my mother.<\/p>\n
The forensic document examiner found the substitution in six weeks. My mother did not deny it. She said the sentence I had heard her say on the telephone the previous winter, the one about a mother knowing her place, and she said it to my face without embarrassment, and that was the last conversation we have had. She lives in Naples now. The foundation removed her in the spring.<\/p>\n
Delphine did not come back to me. I want to be accurate about that. She accepted a house, an apology she did not owe me the chance to give, and a schedule, and she has built something careful and separate that I have no right to interrupt. We are raising them together from two addresses.<\/p>\n
The boys are eleven. I coach a hopeless under twelves side on Saturdays.<\/p>\n
I spent seven years believing I had been left, because believing that was easier than looking closely at the people who told me so. She spent seven years believing she had been discarded.
