He opened it at the table with his mother and both our children watching. Inside was a single page Marguerite had drafted and I had signed that morning. Not divorce papers. A written undertaking, and three conditions. Full disclosure of every Bramwell obligation to a forensic accountant of my choosing. A recorded quitclaim removing his interest in Delphine’s property and a permanent revocation of the power of attorney she had signed believing it concerned insurance. And his signature on a statement confirming, in his own words, that his mother had never knowingly applied for anything. He signed all three that afternoon. Doyle did not, which is why Doyle is the one facing charges.

The brass key was the last thing to make sense. It opened a box at a branch in Sugar Land, and Marguerite had it opened under supervision the following week. Sixty one thousand dollars in cash and a second set of books. Everett had not been drowning. He had been skimming Bramwell’s construction draws for two years to cover the losses he was hiding from Doyle, and the loan against his mother’s house was never about ninety days of breathing room. It was about replacing what he had already taken before the partnership audit in August.

He told the truth eventually, all of it, badly, over four hours at my kitchen table with no one else present. Then he told Delphine, which took him nine days to work up to and which she made him do to her face.

He repaid her in full from the sale of the building. We separated for fourteen months and we are in our second year of counselling now, which nobody in this family expected, least of all me. Imogen still does not speak to him. Tobias does. I have stopped refereeing either decision.

The new recliner went to a charity shop. He sits on the sofa now, in the open, where I can see him, and I am aware of how that sounds and I do not care.

Twenty seven years I had sat in a room with a man and never once thought to look underneath. The lesson was not that people hide things. It was that I had trained myself not to notice, and I will never be that comfortably unobservant in my own life again.
