The letter came on a Tuesday and Callum put his coffee down when I read the first line aloud. My father’s attorney needed my signature to preserve my father’s ownership interest in Thornfield Holdings. I laughed before I opened the attachment.

For three years they had described me as unstable and bitter and jealous of Rosalind, and my silence had been the evidence. It had built slowly, the way these things do. She would insult me and then cry, and my mother would ask why I always had to make everything difficult, and my father would tell me to be the bigger person. I saved five seats at my law school graduation and they went to a vineyard four states away because my sister was having a hard week. My mother told me that at thirty-two I did not need applause for every little achievement, and my father said marrying Callum proved I had started settling.

What none of them knew was that my grandfather had asked me to review the succession documents in my final year, because I was the only person in that family who read anything before signing it. Page three of the trust made the ownership interest contingent on the unanimous written consent of all lineal descendants of the settlor. Not a majority. All of us. My father needed my name to complete a sale he had already accepted a deposit on.

I did not refuse. I went to the meeting and I signed, on one condition, put in writing and witnessed. That he correct, in a letter to every relative he had called, exactly what he had said about my mental health and why.

He wrote it. Eleven letters. My aunt Constance called me the same evening and cried down the phone for twenty minutes.

The sale closed. I took nothing from it, which surprised everybody, including my father.

Rosalind wrote to me last year. Four pages, no request, and a sentence acknowledging the dinner she claimed I ruined never happened. We are being careful with each other now.

They spent three years telling people what I was. I stopped waiting to be believed and simply put the truth on paper, and I have never felt lighter than the day I understood I did not need their version to survive my own life.
