I was stacking birch when the truck came up the gravel behind a car I knew. Five years of nothing, and then my son at the bottom of my porch steps telling me I looked good while two movers waited inside. Kendra explained they had been worried, especially since Odalys passed, and that they had already given up their lease because I had all this space. She walked through my sister’s cabin like an appraiser, opening closets, asking what waterfront was worth up here, telling me that at my age I ought to know the value of my assets. So I made coffee and said nothing, because on that porch anything I said would have become proof I was difficult.

That night I found the shoebox in the study drawer, under the receipts, beside my sister’s glasses on a seed catalogue. Forty letters, every one addressed to me in her handwriting, every one sent back in Kendra’s. She wrote to me monthly for five years and watched each envelope return, and she died thinking I had chosen not to answer her.

Lorraine came up the drive the next afternoon with the file. Not to threaten anyone. She read out the deed, the bank verification, and a letter I had asked her to draft giving them fourteen days to vacate. Kendra called it cruelty. Desmond stood up and said, quietly, that we would be leaving today, meaning himself and her, and then he went out to the truck and started unloading nothing.

They separated that winter. He rebuilt slowly, took a second job, paid the lender himself over three years and never once asked me for a dollar, which I know because I checked.

Odalys wrote her final letter in October. In it she said she understood, that people get busy, and that she was not angry. I read it every year on her birthday and it still takes me an hour afterward to be all right.

Desmond comes in June and we open the cabin together. He has learned to sit in silence with me without filling it.

Someone spent five years telling my sister I did not care. The truth outlived them both, and I have stopped letting anyone else narrate who I am.
