The estimate was nine thousand four hundred and the job took eleven days. New pump, new pipes, new filtration, and water that went from green sludge to glass. Then Corrine stood at the edge of it and asked whether he seriously expected that much for this, and when my father produced the estimate carrying her own signature, she laughed and reminded him that her husband employed his daughter. I was ready to sink into the paving. Dad just looked out across the water for a while, smiled, and said okay. She smirked at our backs and called out that she was glad we understood each other.

At home I asked why he had not fought her, and he took a beer out of the fridge and said that in the morning they would understand why he had needed both of their signatures on that contract.

The second page nobody had read gave him the right to file a mechanic’s lien and, more importantly, obliged him to report any code violation uncovered during excavation. When he had opened the ground for the new pipe run he had found the original 1978 pool shell sitting directly on top of a sealed well head, which is illegal, and which the previous owner had never disclosed. That previous owner was Ottilie Marchetti, eighty three, who had sold the house under duress four years earlier after Nolan’s firm handled her late husband’s estate, and whose disclosure documents had been altered after she signed them.

My father had recognised her handwriting from a permit in the county file and had driven out to see her himself.

The police were there about the altered documents. The county was there about the well. Nolan settled with Ottilie eleven months later for an amount nobody has ever told me, and he sold that house, and I found a better job before any of it concluded.

Dad was paid the nine thousand four hundred, in full, by cheque, in the driveway.

He told me afterward that he never planned any of it. He simply refused to be told what his work was worth by someone who had never once done any. I think about that more than I expected to. Dignity is not something you argue for. It is something you already have, and quietly refuse to hand over.
