She found it in the attic beneath the decorations and laughed at my hair, and there I was at eighteen in pale blue, and there beside me was Wesley. We had been together since sophomore year. He worked evenings at his father’s hardware store and saved for the community college and the flat he called the smallest apartment in America. Seven weeks after that photograph, the house burned before dawn. They pulled him out alive. Four days later his mother rang me crying and said he had not made it, and then the family moved away, and I was eighteen and eventually I stopped waiting.

Priya tapped his face and said that was the man at school who saved her a cookie after lunch. She said he had asked whether her grandmother was called Coralie. Then she pointed above his left eyebrow at the faint crescent scar from my brother’s bicycle, the one almost nobody ever noticed. Then she took the brass hardware store key out of her backpack, the one he wore on a chain, with a note telling me to call and that I should not have trusted my family.

The voice on the phone was his. Eighty two years old, alive, and he had spent eleven months of 1981 in a burns unit two states away. My mother had taken his letters from the mailbox for over a year. His mother had been told I wanted nothing more to do with a boy who would need thirty operations, and both women thought they were sparing their child a ruined life, and neither of them ever said a word.

I did not faint from grief. My blood pressure dropped and Priya, who is sensible, called for help. I was home by evening.

We had four years. He came to Sunday dinners. He taught Priya to solder. He and my son got on immediately, which annoyed me for reasons I never fully worked out.

He died in March, in a bed, with his hand in mine, which is all I ever wanted for him.

I keep the key on the kitchen windowsill. Two women decided what my life could survive and never asked me. A nine year old looked at a photograph and simply told the truth, and that was enough to give me back everything I had been told was gone.
