She was seventy three and four weeks into chemotherapy when I brought her home with us, into the first floor guest room across from the bathroom, because the stairs had already become too much for her. I asked Desmond first. He was not enthusiastic, but he did not object. Then a work trip took me away for five days, and my last meeting finished early, so I drove back on the morning of the fifth instead of the evening.

Chips ground into the carpet. Beer bottles on every table. The television going at full volume from my mother’s room, where my husband and his brother had set up because that was where the screen was. When I asked where she was he shrugged and said the basement, and when I repeated her age back to him he told me it was his room and his house and that he was the man of the house. She was on an air mattress on the concrete under a thin blanket, her pills beside a water bottle on a cardboard box, no bathroom within reach.

I helped her upstairs. Then I called Desmond’s mother, Adelaide, who is eighty and who raised him alone after his father left, and who arrived at seven with her coat still buttoned. She did not shout at him. She sat at our table and asked him one question, quietly, over and over, in different words. Where do you think you will sleep when you are seventy three. He could not answer it. He cried. His brother left halfway through.

We separated four months later, and not because of Adelaide. It was because I finally understood that the man had been telling me for eleven years exactly whose house he believed it was, and I had kept deciding to hear something gentler.

My mother finished treatment in the spring and is clear. She lives with me now, in the good room, and Adelaide comes for lunch on Wednesdays and the two of them are somehow inseparable.

I bought Desmond out. The deed has one name on it and I read it sometimes for no reason at all.

I spent years being a partial owner of my own life. What I learned in that basement is that anyone who needs to announce their authority over you has already confessed they do not have it, and that I was never asking permission to matter.
