My mother’s eyes went straight to his boots. They were worn, and that settled it for her, so she gestured at a small table outside near the catering entrance, close enough to the bins that you could smell them, with rain turning the grass to mud. She said there had been no seat planned for extra guests. When I said he was my husband, she offered to bring us leftovers. Elias only asked what I wanted to do. I stayed, out of stubbornness, and I have thought about that choice many times since.

At the reception Aubrey came over in her designer gown and told me it was embarrassing having to explain us to her friends, looked at his boots, called him a farmhand, and tipped her glass so the red wine ran down the front of my dress. People laughed. My mother stood close enough to hear all of it and smiled. Elias handed me a napkin and said it was fine, and I understood he was not talking about the dress.

Then the doors opened, the room stood up for the private investor everyone had spent the evening hoping to meet, and a man in a good suit crossed the ballroom and called my husband Mr. Thorne.

He shook the hand, said he was sorry, and told them the firm would not be pursuing anything in the county. Then he took my coat off the back of a folding chair and we left. That was the whole of it. No speech.

The development went elsewhere. Aubrey’s father-in-law understood exactly why and never said a word about it publicly. My mother called eleven times that first week and I did not answer, and then she wrote, and it took her four letters to stop explaining herself and start apologising. We had coffee eight months later. It was awkward and honest and I was glad I went.

Aubrey and I do not speak. She sent a message last year saying she had never known, and I wrote back that knowing should not have mattered, and she has not replied since.

Elias still drives the pickup and still fixes mug handles at our kitchen table.

They looked at a pair of worn boots and thought they had the measure of a man, and of me. I no longer need anyone to see what my husband is worth. I only need them to have understood, one night in the rain, that I was never sitting at that table because I belonged there.
