My daughter did not ask. She said the girl was eating with us, and I was already at the stove trying to make one pan reach four people. The girl behind her wore an oversized hoodie in August and kept her eyes on the floor. Rennie called her Tovah. I said grab a plate, and in my head I cut the meat and added rice and hoped nobody would notice. Dinner was quiet. Tovah ate slowly and carefully, like each bite counted, and drank glass after glass of water, and flinched at every small noise in the house.

Afterward I told Rennie she could not bring people home when we were barely managing, and she told me Tovah had not eaten all day, had nearly fainted at school again, that her father was working every hour he could find because of hospital bills, that their power had been shut off the week before, and that she only ever ate the school lunch. I sat down. I had been worrying about portions. That girl was trying to get to tomorrow. I said bring her back.

She came every day after that. Homework at the counter, dinner, then home. Then one evening her backpack slid off her shoulder and a folded page fell out. It was a chart she had drawn herself. Down one side, every day of the month. Across the top, four columns. Water. Lunch. Dinner. Her mother’s medication schedule, hour by hour, in a fourteen year old’s careful handwriting. She had been running that house since March. Her mother was on a transplant list in another city, her father drove nights, and Tovah had been doing all of it and telling nobody, and she had built a system so she would not forget anything.

I called her father the next morning. It took him a long while to say anything at all. Then he cried, and I stayed on the line.

Her mother received a kidney in February. Tovah lived with us for eleven weeks that winter and had the guest room and a key. She is twenty two now and studying nursing, and she comes for dinner most Sundays, and she still sits at that same counter.

I thought I did not have enough to give. What I actually did not have was the imagination to see what a child was carrying alone. She was never a burden. She was simply waiting for one adult to look.
