It went on for about three weeks before I did anything about it. My eight year old kept coming back through the door with ice cream she had no money to buy. The first time it was a strawberry shortcake bar, and when I asked she just said the man gave it to her. I assumed he had a spare. Then it happened again, and by the third time I asked why, and she shrugged and said he told her strawberry was my favorite too. Those bars genuinely were my favorite as a kid. She had never told him my name, and never told him what I used to eat. So the next evening, when the music came down our street, I walked out with her.

He was in his mid sixties, gray hair under a baseball cap, glasses. He said hey kiddo to Nora without looking up, and then he saw me and went still, the way people do when a face almost matches something. He asked if I was her mother, nodded a few times, and then said Delia, which I had never given him. When I asked whether I knew him he laughed a little and said probably not anymore.

Then he handed Nora a folded page and told her to make sure her mom read it. It was one paragraph. He was Raymond Ellis. He had driven the same route in 1993, in a different town, when a nine year old girl came out most evenings with change from a coffee tin. That girl was me. My mother had been sick for two years and my father worked nights, and Raymond had quietly stopped taking my money somewhere around that July and never said a word about it. I had genuinely forgotten. He wrote that he had not, that he had thought about me for thirty years, and that the moment he saw Nora ask for strawberry he had known.

He came to dinner in August. He brought photographs of the old truck. He and my father, who is eighty now, sat on the porch talking about a town they both left decades ago.

Nora calls him Uncle Ray. He drives one more summer, he says, every summer.

Some people carry you through a season and never expect to be remembered for it. Being found by one of them, years later, is the closest thing I know to proof that we were seen the whole time.
