It began with ten minutes. Roberta would leave her SUV on my drive while she visited someone across the road, and ten minutes stretched to an hour, then three, then overnight. I asked politely and she always agreed and never once meant it. I bought a sign, PRIVATE DRIVEWAY, NO PARKING, and she parked beside it and told me I was making a huge deal out of nothing. She was right that the space sat empty most days. After my husband died there was only my car. Empty is not the same as available, though she never learned the difference. Then came the doctor’s appointment at 8:15 that I had waited weeks for, and twenty minutes of knocking and calling at her door, and her strolling out that afternoon to say she had been asleep, and shrugging, and smiling.<\/p>\n
So on Monday I let her park, poured a second coffee, and watched thirty invited cars fill my drive and the gravel lane behind it while she slept. When she came out in a robe demanding I move them, I told her I could not, and that she barely used her car anyway.<\/p>\n
The last man out was Harold Beckwith, seventy-eight, gray, dark coat, folder under his arm. He is the surveyor who mapped that lane in 1974. What Roberta never understood was that the gravel behind my property is a registered right of way serving the old orchard, and my husband spent his last four years restoring it. Those thirty drivers were the volunteers who had kept it going since, arriving for the annual survey walk they had done every autumn for eleven years. Harold was Roberta’s father in law, from a marriage she left in 1998 without a word to anyone. He simply said her name once, quietly.<\/p>\n
She moved out that spring. Not because of me. Because she had spent twenty-six years arranging a life in which no one from before could find her, and one morning a driveway she had treated as scenery turned out to belong to someone.<\/p>\n
The orchard opened to the public last October. There is a bench at the top of the lane with my husband’s name on it, and Harold sits there most Sundays.<\/p>\n
