The blueberries were in rows of ten. My son does that when the room feels wrong, and that morning the room felt very wrong. Julian put an offer of one hundred and eighty million on the marble island in front of an eight year old and told him he did not have a son with an IQ that low. Serena stood beside him wearing my perfume, telling me not to make it ugly. Micah looked up with those calm gray eyes and said there were two hundred and fifty blueberries and that his father had dropped two. Julian laughed like that settled everything. I smiled, asked whether he had actually read his own documents, folded them, kissed my son’s forehead, and said we would see them in court.

He never knew what he had married. Before I became his quiet wife I had testified in a federal banking fraud case, and my father’s private fund had bought Kade Harbor’s debt during the first bankruptcy, which left me holding voting control and protective clauses Julian had signed without reading. For four weeks he made it worse. Serena mailed toddler toys with notes about Micah’s level. Rosalind called from blocked numbers to say a man like her son was never meant to raise a slow child, and I recorded all of it. Then Micah noticed the slant of Serena’s handwriting was wrong, and we found the forgeries Rosalind had been using to drain assets into shell companies. Two days before the hearing Julian raised the number to two hundred and twenty million. I told him no and closed the door.

In the courtroom, Micah was allowed to sit at the back with a notebook. When opposing counsel entered the notarized transfers, my son looked up and said, out loud, that the same notary commission number appeared on two stamps with different expiry dates. Eight seconds. The judge asked him to repeat it. Rosalind stood up before anyone asked her to, and that was the end. The forgery unraveled into a fraud referral, Julian lost the company to my voting bloc, and Serena, who had been the signature and not the forger, walked out of that building alone.

I kept nothing that was not already ours. Micah is twelve now and counts things less. Last week he told me he no longer needs to know the number to feel safe. His father still calls him defective. His father is simply wrong, and my son has finally stopped waiting for that man to see him.
