“Is that you, son?” the old man asked. The woman took my arm gently and explained everything, there in the doorway, while I struggled to understand. The man in the chair was Gerald’s father, Walter, a man I had been told died before I ever met my husband. And the woman was Gerald’s younger sister, Ruth, a sister I never knew existed. Gerald had spent his whole life telling me he had no family left. It had been a lie, but not the kind I had feared in the truck.<\/p>\n

I drove that forty-minute route myself, over and over, in the truck Gerald loved, to help care for Walter in his final year. Ruth and I became close in a way I think Gerald always hoped we would. Learning to drive at fifty-nine didn’t just give me my freedom. It gave me the last, hidden chapter of the man I’d loved for forty years, and a family I never knew I had.
