Inside the folded paper was a diamond ring, and beneath it, a smaller slip of paper with an appraisal figure written in Carol’s handwriting. I stared at it, not understanding, until my husband made a sound like the air had been knocked out of him. “That’s Grandma Eleanor’s ring,” he whispered. “The one that went missing after the funeral. The one everyone said was lost.” He looked at his mother, whose face had gone from pale to gray. “Mom. You said it was never found. You told the whole family it was gone.”<\/p>\n
Carol’s hands were shaking on the strap of her purse. “You don’t understand,” she said. “I was going to sell it. It’s mine to sell. She was my mother.” But my husband was already shaking his head, and my nine-year-old daughter, still standing between Carol and the door, spoke up in a small, certain voice. “I saw Grandma hide it, Mommy. She wrapped it up and pushed it way down in the jar, under the cookies, and then she put the jar in the trash bag. I thought it was weird, so I took the jar out.” I looked at the ring, then at the appraisal number, then at the woman who had spent years quietly rearranging my kitchen, and I finally understood that the rearranging had never been about being helpful at all.<\/p>\n
