It was close to midnight when I heard a faint click outside\u2014metal on metal, too deliberate to be a cat. Another sound followed, like paper being shuffled. I grabbed my phone and crept to the window. A man was leaning into my car. I shouted before I meant to. He jerked upright, hands raised. I said I was calling the police. He swallowed and asked me not to run him off. He was maybe mid-forties, jacket hanging loose, cheeks hollow. He was not holding the radio or the change. He was holding my daughter\u2019s scuffed pink lunch box.<\/p>\n
Inside it was half a peanut butter sandwich in wax paper and a bottle of water. He had not touched anything else. He said he was hungry and sorry. The phone felt heavy. I thought about my daughter asleep upstairs, and about how ready I had been to make this someone else\u2019s problem. I told him to come inside. It was cold. He could eat. He hesitated as if it might be a trick, then followed me up the steps. I locked the door with shaking hands, set the lunch box on the counter, and made soup and grilled cheese. He ate slowly at first, then faster, eyes closing with each bite. When he finished he whispered thank you.<\/p>\n
He talked. A marriage that ended badly, a job lost in layoffs, a few hard months that became years. He had been sleeping behind the shopping center, showering at the gym when he could, counting change for coffee. He used to have a house with a yard. He said \u201cused to\u201d a lot. When he stood to leave I gave him leftovers and a clean jacket from the hall closet. He tried to refuse. I did not let him. Over the following weeks I helped him find a caseworker and drove him to interviews. He got overnight stocking work, then a room, then an apartment. We kept in touch the way people do after they meet at a crossroads.<\/p>\n
Now we meet for coffee once a month. He insists on paying. He asks about my daughter and remembers her favorite color. Sometimes he grows quiet over his cup and then looks up and says that the night I fed him instead of calling the police was the night he decided he was worth saving. I still think about that click in the dark, and how close I came to a different choice.
